Overheight & Oversize Load Awareness for Commercial Drivers
Training to Prevent Costly Overpass Collisions
At Valley Driving School, we take overheight awareness and load security seriously. With the number of overpass incidents on BC highways increasing since 2021, the risks to infrastructure, driver safety, and your professional reputation are too high to ignore. Our commercial driver training and pre-trip inspection training sessions include enhanced training to help prevent these avoidable incidents.
What You’ll Learn:
- How to measure total vehicle and load height accurately
- How to plan safe routes for overheight or oversize loads using DriveBC and other tools
- When and how to apply for permits for overheight or oversize loads
- Common causes of overpass collisions and how to avoid them
- Pre-trip routines that include equipment checks and height verification
- Driver requirements and duties (final height check, route compliance, driver liability)
Why It’s Important:
Bridge and overpass strikes lead to costly fines, repairs, service delays, and higher insurance premiums. As of 2023, overheight vehicle fines in BC have increased to $575, with repeat offenses leading to suspended operating certificates and loss of contracts. The province of BC is also reviewing additional changes that would allow for even larger fines to be applied to drivers and the companies they work for, in the future. Beyond penalties, these collisions put public safety and your career at risk. Knowing your load height and planning your route properly is part of being a safe and responsible commercial driver.
