BC Employer Training Grant for Commercial Drivers

What is the BC Employer Training Grant?
The ETG offers funding to employers to support skills training for employees, including possible new hires. By helping pay for skills training, employers get the skilled workers they need for their businesses to succeed, while employees gain the skills they need for better job security or to advance their careers.
Key Funding Details:
- Employers can receive up to 80% of the cost of eligible training
- The total government funding for each participant cannot be more than $10,000 in a fiscal year (April 1 to March 31)
- Employers can receive up to $300,000 in total government funding from the ETG per fiscal year
Is your business Eligible?
Grants are available to businesses and organizations of all sizes, including self-employed people. To qualify as an eligible employer, you must meet a few specific provincial requirements:
- You must have a Business BCeID to apply for funding, and third parties (like grant writers or training providers) cannot apply on your behalf.
- Your business must have been fully operational in B.C. for at least one year at the time of application.
- You must have a business licence if your municipality or city requires one, or provide documentation confirming your exemption.
- Eligible employers include non-profit organizations, municipalities, regional districts, Indigenous governments, and unions applying on behalf of workers they represent.
- Provincial, federal, and territorial government employers, including Crown corporations and public post-secondary institutions, are not eligible.
- You must be in good standing with the Province, meeting all obligations under applicable legislation and regulations.
Who Can Be Trained?
If you are an employer selecting a candidate, or a job seeker looking to be sponsored by a local motor carrier, you must meet the following criteria at the time of application:
- If an employee is receiving Employment Insurance (EI) or Income Assistance (IA), they must receive approval from the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty before training begins, or they risk losing their benefits.
- Participants must be at least 16 years old.
- Participants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act who are entitled to work in Canada.
- Temporary foreign workers, international students, and other temporary residents are not eligible.
- Participants must be unemployed, self-employed, employed by the applying business, or employed by another company directly/indirectly impacted by local economic disruptions.
- If you choose to train a family member, you must email the ETG office when submitting your application with a clear reason for choosing them to avoid a real or perceived conflict of interest.
What Costs Are Covered?
The ETG is designed to cover the direct costs of education. Valley Driving School’s commercial programs provide excellent value and align perfectly with these eligible expenses:
- Tuition fees
- Mandatory student fees and examination fees
- Textbooks, software, and other required materials
Expenses NOT Covered:
- Participant wages while they are in training
- Equipment such as boots and tools
- Hardware purchases like laptops or tablets
Employers must pay all costs in full and submit the related receipts. Participants are not to pay for any training or training-related expenses. If a participant has paid for an expense, the employer must fully reimburse them prior to submitting a claim.
Steps to Receiving a Grant
Applying for the ETG is a straightforward process, but applying early is crucial to ensure your funding is secured.
- Create a Business BCeID account: This gives your business secure electronic access to online government services.
- Identify training needs: Pick your participant and choose a recognized training provider like Valley Driving School.
- Submit application: Apply online through the Skills Training Grants System. Note: Participants must fill out an online Participant Information Form (PIF) before you can submit your application.
- Receive decision: Wait for the Province’s approval.
- Begin training: Start your program! Keep in mind, training can start before you apply for funding, but if funding is not approved you will not be reimbursed for costs.
- Submit claim & report: After training has started, submit a reimbursement claim. Once all participants have finished their programs, employers will also have to submit an “Employer Completion Report”.
