Ontario class AZ drivers who have moved to BC and are applying for a class 1 driver’s licence may be required to take additional training for air brakes in BC if they have less than 24 months of consecutive class 1 experience from Ontario.

While drivers may have taken air brake training during the course of their MELT training in Ontario, it’s not a mandatory requirement for class AZ drivers as part of the Ontario MELT Program. The air brake system on a tractor-trailer vehicle is a fundamental component of the vehicle configuration and lack of knowledge on how this system works and how to check for proper brake adjustment poses a significant road safety risk for all road users, especially in mountainous regions.

Before being issued a class 1 licence in BC, ICBC will require drivers to complete a minimum of 15.5 hours of air brake theory and practical training at a MELT approved, air brake certification facility. Valley Driving School’s course exceeds ICBC requirements with a course 18.25 hours in duration. Students should contact ICBC prior to registration to confirm licensing requirements and to obtain a British Columbia driver’s licence number (required to participate in training).
