There are many advantages to being a safe driver for a trucking or transportation company. As a driver employed by a trucking company, drivers can leave work at the workplace, and there is little commitment to the start-up costs associated with being an own owner/operator. You get all the access to the open road you could desire, while avoiding the expenses associated with running a business.
We’ve all seen this before: you’re driving down the road and see a vehicle heading in the other direction with some lights flashing on the roofline and a reflective chevron on the bumper. A decal that says OVERSIZE LOAD adorns the front of the vehicle.
These days, regulations and standardized licensing and permits involved with operating a commercial trucking vehicle is the norm. All reputable drivers and owner/operators in the province of British Columbia have had to adhere to the national standards supported by provincial regulations as part of the updated National Safety Code Program since April of 2013, when the code was reviewed to improve commercial vehicle safety in BC.
We hear from a lot of enthusiastic and motivated people who are gung-ho to become a truck driver. The reason for this excitement and optimism? They think that it’s all about sitting on your butt and driving all day; they think it’s easy money, and an easy career to maintain and excel at.
