As a L/N driver, I am not allowed to use hand-held or hands-free devices. Can I still use a dashcam?
Yes! Modern dash cams do not have an active screen or require use by a driver during operation, so L and N drivers are permitted to use a dash cam. The device is securely mounted in your car, out of view and is just recording it's environment. Just remember, any adjusting of your dash cam should be done before or after your drive, when you are safely parked. For further clarification on using a dash cam while an L or N driver, please contact ICBC.
Can new drivers benefit from a dash cam?
Yes! As a newly licensed driver, a dash cam can be beneficial both for the new driver and the parent of the new driver. Dash cams, especially front-and-back systems, are beneficial for students as it can provide added protection when faced with challenges on the road. A dash cam allows drivers to provide police and insurance companies with real-time proof during an incident, and even if the driver is not the one involved, their footage could be useful as a witness. Also, an L or an N on the back of a new drivers’ vehicle alerts other traffic that they are still developing their skills, but also means that new drivers can be easily blamed for incidents that may not be 100% their fault. A dash cam prevents all parties from jumping to conclusions. Dash cams also provide an added level of security and surveillance when cars are on the road or on the driveway as recording is motion activated. And don't forget, parents can find dash cams very useful as it allows them to review footage and see that their child is indeed a safe and knowledgeable driver when they are in their N licensing stage, with no supervisor.
