How Do Air Brakes Work?

How do air brakes differ from hydraulic brakes? The primary answer is hydraulic brakes use fluid to stop, while air brakes use air, as their name aptly implies. When you press down on the brake pedal, air goes into the brake chamber, pushing the brake pads against the brake drum, which eventually causes the vehicle to come to a complete stop. When the brake pedals retract, air is released and the brakes are released, allowing your vehicle to begin rolling again. A compressor is used to increase the amount of air pressure inside your system.

What Kind of Vehicles Use Air Brakes?

Air brakes are usually preferred in heavier trucks (above 26,000 pounds) because they have more ability to stop even when they fail. If there’s a leak in an air brake system, the vehicle will still come to a complete stop because the amount of air pressure will decrease, which will activate the brakes.

Because operating an air brake system feels very different than operating a hydraulic one, air brake courses such as those offered at Valley Driving School in British Columbia are required to teach a driver how to operate this type of system safely and effectively. In addition to our Air Brake Course, we also provide Air Brake Certification and Air Brake Endorsements for all your needs. Contact us to learn more or to enroll today!
